Removing Wallpaper

If you want to remove wallpaper yourself then you need to know kinds of wallpaper and kinds of backing. Also the costs involved. There are two kinds of backing. Peel away and non peel away. It helps you to find out which one you have.

First find a discreet area on the wall and test a small section by gently tearing the wallpaper. If it comes off easily, the paper can be dry-stripped. You can go ahead and rip away.

If not then you need to dissolve the adhesive that’s gluing the wallpaper to the wall. You can also use wallpaper remover, which may take several hours to several days. It’s depending on the backing, room size and any complications that arise. It costs less than hiring a professional. You only have to pay for materials & tools.

Removing Wallpaper

Choosing a wallpaper removal technique is very important while removing wallpaper from walls. It depends on what kind of paper, what kind of surface you have.

Some techniques are mentioned below.

A. Dry-stripping

If it is dry-strippable then you need to loosen each strip at the corners with a putty knife and slowly peel it back at a 10 to 15 degree angle. Remember don’t pull the wallpaper straight out or your underlying surface may damage, if it’s drywall.

B. Scraping & Soaking it off

If you are going to remove nonstrippable paper, turn first to warm water and wallpaper removal solvent. Soak the surface with a wallpaper remover solution. You can use a spray bottle. The most effective way to get the solution on the wall and not all over the floor is to use a a spray bottle or a paint roller. After that scrape the sodden paper off with a wide taping knife or a wallpaper scraper.

If you are successful in using this approach, you can finish your job.

C. Giving it a steam bath

That process can be applied, if you are going to remove wallpaper that has been painted over or more than one layer of wall-paper. If you see that the wallpapeer was not applied to a sealed surface, removing it can be impossible without damaging the wall. Removing task can become tough.

You can use a wallpaper steamer for that task. It’s a hotplate attached to a hose extending from a hot water reservoir that heats the water and directs steam to the hotplate. similarly you can use a wallpaper scraper and steamer with same confidence on plaster walls. But be careful while working on drywall.

Removing Wallpaper from wall

Wallpaper removing from walls and ceilings might be messy but quite easy. Like wallpaper installation, wallpaper removal is also an art. If you don’t apply proper techniques your wall or ceiling can be messed up. Before removing old wallpaper from walls you need to know the type of wallcovering and type of wall surface you have. Generally walls are either plaster or drywall smoothed over narrow strip. Plaster is harder & smoother than drywall. Drywall is vulnerable to water damage, avoid overwetting it.

While removing wallpaper just assume wallpaper is dry and strippable. By using a putty knife lift a corner of the paper from the wall. Hold the wallpaper with both hands & attempt to peel it back slowly. If it doesn’t peel off and only decorative surface layer peels off then stop current process, use wallpaper solvent and backing with water, then scrape it off.
